There is something that’s exceptionally liberating about carrying your life on your back. Minimizing your possessions creates a great sense of freedom. This freedom, coupled with an itinerary of not knowing where you will sleep or who you will meet each day, is a recipe for great adventures.
Ever since I started backpacking, I’ve been sort of hooked. The idea of going from place to place and exploring different cultures truly excites me. This excitement is then enhanced by the stories I find– anecdotes from both the locals and other passionate travelers whose paths I cross.
From hostel to hostel, there are loads of backpackers, looking to explore and connect with like minds. Each carries their own unique stories– where they are coming from and where they are headed, what brought them here, and what it is that they are seeking.
I’ve found Central America to be a haven for these wanderlusts (Guatemala especially), catering to the backpacker on a budget.
In February 2016, I set off to Guatemala with a backpack. I began on Lake Atitán and finished three months and 1,134 miles (1825km) later, using a combination of busses, shuttles, boats and tuk tuks to get to Canún, Mexico.
My girlfriend and I captured the stunning landscapes and rich cultures we bathed in along the way, mixed together with the stories of the beautiful souls we met in passing.
I was most inspired by a family of four we met who cycled from Quebec to Central America.
Here is the story of our journey:
