Meet Eyal

The Chef Who Decides What You're Going To Eat

Meet Eyal

In business, we often hear that the customer is always right, but this is not the case at Gingerbread Restaurant Hotel, a different world with its own set of rules.

This is Eyal.

He’s the owner and chef of what is widely considered to be the best restaurant in all of Costa Rica.

Eyal left a conventional western life in the U.S. as a top notch chef to create Gingerbread, which he refers to as his own world.

It’s a unique experience to dine and stay at this boutique restaurant hotel, located beside the breathtaking Lake Arenal in the rainforest of Costa Rica.  Eyal’s world is one in which he tells you what you’re going to eat, and if you don’t like it, you can get up and leave at no cost.  At first glance, his strong personality may catch you off guard, but once given the opportunity to let his savory food melt your taste buds, his world soon becomes yours.

I first met Eyal in August 2012, when I stayed and dined at Gingerbread with some friends.  I have been back several times since, and still consider his food to be some of the best I’ve tasted in my life.

What inspired me most about Eyal was not only his passion and love for food, but the atmosphere he creates in his restaurant.  It has a very home-style feel, and he is very personable with his customers, to the point where you feel like you’re going over to a friend’s house for dinner. Every time I go back, I feel so very alive.

I was intrigued by Eyal’s story of going from working the 12-14 hour day as a chef, to finding a way to run his own show.  Here’s a little glimpse into Eyal’s world:

“Bottom line… In the end, you have to be where you feel good. Where you feel good, where you feel happy… that’s where your home is.”

Thank you, Eyal.
